Bollywood 'My Name Is Khan' Center of Controversy
My Name Is Khan is scheduled to open worldwide on Friday. The 2010
Bollywood film starring Shahrukh Khan and Kajol is directed by Karan
Johar. A collaborative production between Dharma Productions and Red
Chillies Entertainment and distributed by FOX Star Entertainment, the
film has already tweaked the emotions of fans and protesters alike. The
upcoming release in India in particular has met with controversy, while
patiently waiting fans wonder at the fate of the much anticipated
release.
According to reports, advanced bookings of the film in Mumbai have now
been stopped because of turbulent demonstrations by Shiv Sena
activists. Theaters have been vandalized, posters and billboards
destroyed, threats have been made. Police have already arrested some
1000 protesters, all because the film?s star supported the right for
Pakistani cricketeers to play in the Indian Premier League. There has
certainly been no love lost between India and Pakistan over the
decades, but allowing athletes to compete? This is not what India,
Bollywood, or the world needs to see out of one of the world?s fastest
growing and most vibrant economies.
As fate would have it, My Name Is Khan is a touching film created by
some of the most gifted artists in the movie business. The film is a
story of a boy?s struggles with inconceivable personal hurdles, but
more importantly a couple?s undying affection for one another. The film
is said to be a statement on issues, but all those connected deny any
such attribute, contesting that emotional drama is the heart of My Name
Is Khan. It is a shame that such an apparently fine piece of cinematic
art could be overshadowed by hatred and even violence. We will keep you
updated on the film?s release, and we will try to contact the producers
for more information.
