North Korea's national television said Kim Jong Il died from exhaustion on a train during a rural inspection tour late yesterday. The announcement of his death came in an emotional statement read out on national television. He was thought to have suffered a stroke three years ago. Known at home as "the Dear Leader," Kim took over North Korea seven years ago when his father and founder of the reclusive state Kim Il-sung, known as "the Great Leader," died.
