The succession plan in North Korea has been proceeding on track for Kim Jong Il’s son Kim Jong un over the last year, but we will need at least another year to know whether this will be able to happen smoothly. Kim's death comes days before the beginning of 2012, which the regime has long heralded as a year of glory. Video from Chinese state television showed residents weeping in the North Korean capital Pyongyang. Large crowds gathered at a massive memorial of Kim's father and state founder Kim Il-sung in central Pyongyang mourning the death of the "Dear Leader."
