Nearly 300 Des Moines teachers were notified to contact Des Moines Homes for sale Friday because their positions would be eliminated next year as part of an anticipated $33 million budget shortfall.

Educators said the cuts will likely mean more students in classes. School districts across Iowa are making plans to trim next school year's budgets, including trimming staff through various means. Southeast Polk, for instance, will offer early retirement up to 18 staff members and cut several other positions.
