Google is trying hard to compete with Yahoo! in the email category because it knows thatÂ’s one of the last strongholds the Sunnyvale-based company is left with on the Internet. At the moment, itÂ’s bringing more changes to Gmail in a month than Yahoo! does in a year, and thatÂ’s according to statistics. Then again, when youÂ’ve got a late start, thatÂ’s the only way to do it.

Not many people know about the personal level indicators that GoogleÂ’s email service is offering, so far itÂ’s been one of ... read more »

Mac OS X Leopard only: Free, open source application Secrets rolls every hidden feature of Leopard into an easy-to-use preference pane in your System Preferences. Developed by the author of the much-beloved Quicksilver, you can browse Secrets by application to see what tweaks are available for the apps you have installed. There's a ton to look into with Secrets, but the one secret that blew my mind off the bat was the "Arrows link to library instead of store" tweak in iTunes, which may be the most useful thing I've ever done to iTunes (and I've covered the best iTunes add-ons). Secrets is free, Mac OS X only. If you give it a try, share your favorite Secrets in the comments.

Firefox with Greasemonkey: The comment threads here at Lifehacker can get lengthy, and when you want to reply to a certain point someone made 12 comments up, it's not as easy and readable as it could be. Sure you can hit the convenient Reply (arrow) button next to a comment to link back to it, but it would be better if you could quote the person you're replying to easily. Instead of doing the whole copy/paste/HTML markup dance by hand, install our brand new Quote in Reply Greasemonkey user script. With this script enabled, you can select text in someone else's comment here at Lifehacker (and other Gawker Media sites), and when you hit the reply button, the quote automatically appears in your comment, all italicized and pretty-like. After the jump, download and install the script.

You already know how to set up Firefox quick searches by right-clicking in a web page's search box—like on the Google home page—and choosing "Add a keyword for this search." Now in Firefox 3, you can manage search engine keywords in Firefox's built-in search box. Hit the down arrow next to the currently selected engine and choose "Manage Search Engines." There you can view, add, and edit keywords—like w for Wikipedia. Once you've got a quick search set up, just type it and your query into the location bar. For example, typing w Lifehacker will run a search on Wikipedia for Lifehacker. Here's more on read more »

no-more-up-button.pngWindows Vista tip: If you've been missing the Up navigation button in Windows Explorer since you upgraded to Vista, the functionality is still there—it's just hidden behind an Alt-up keyboard shortcut. Now when you want to move to the parent folder of the folder you're currently browsing inside, just hold Alt and tap the up arrow. We're assuming Windows decided to drop the Up functionality in Vista because in most cases, the Back arrow (or Backspace) will suffice, but if you've jumped to different folders in the sidebar or you started browsing your filesystem below the root, the Back button just doesn't do the trick. Luckily Alt-up is a simple, intuitive shortcut alternative. Thanks Chuma!
