The Windows AutoPlay feature is the bane of many a PC user, particularly because of nasty DRM histories and other intrusive business, but what about when you actually want to use the AutoPlay feature? For example, let's say you're a fan of Lifehacker's very own DVD-ripping tool, DVD Rip, and you want your computer to automatically start ripping DVDs as soon as you put one in (making the simple one-click solution even simpler). Windows only: If you do a lot of DVD watching and ripping on your PC, free, open source application DiscInsert provides an attractive and simple AutoPlay option to Windows that lets you choose between opening the inserted disc in your favorite DVD player or DVD ripper. When you insert the disc, DiscInsert looks up the disc info and displays the simple rip or play dialog; it can also pass parameters (like the DVD title) to your ripping tool of choice. It doesn't automate the entire ripping process like our very own DVD Rip, but if you prefer a more hands-on approach, the free, Windows-only DiscInsert is worth a try. Windows only: Freeware application Desk Drive monitors your computer for new media—like a new CD, DVD, or thumb drive—then automatically creates a desktop shortcut pointing to your newly mounted media. Disabling autoplay is safer and less annoying than leaving it enabled, but that means you have to open up My Computer every time you plug in a thumb drive or insert a new disc. Desk Drive gives you quick and easy access to that media from your desktop as soon as you plug it in, similar to the default (and arguably better) behavior found on Macs. The downside: Desk Drive takes up way too much memory (around 17MB in my test), so it may not be worth it unless you've got boatloads of RAM.
