emailfx.png On Monday we covered how to ping any server from the Firefox address bar with a quick search bookmark. If your fingers Ctrl+L faster than they launch a terminal window, there are four more quick searches that can turn your address bar into a network command line. After the jump, download a bookmarks file of quick searches for whois, traceroute, email (via Gmail), and domain lookups as well as ping.

Once you've imported the bookmark file below, in Firefox's address bar, just type the utility name and hand it a parameter (either domain name, email address, or IP address). Here are the five commands and their usage:

ping example.com
lookup IP address or example.com

statusbar_cropped.jpgThe How-To Geek points to a nifty fix for Firefox extension fans whose status bars are seriously cluttered. Using a custom script and the Stylish extension, you can get your status bar icons to auto-hide and appear only when you move your mouse down to them. A lot of extensions pack handy utilities into their status bar icons, but it's not always helpful to have a weight-lifting fox, a monkey, three or four exclamation points, and a weather sign staring at you while you're trying to work. To use this trick, install Stylish if you don't have it already, then head to the link below and hit the "Load into Stylish" button. Image by The How-To Geek.

The Wired How-To Wiki takes on the age-old art of bar tricks, detailing several impressive and death-defying techniques for impressing and making good when you're out on the town this weekend. Some tricks are more jaw-dropping than others, but the obvious standout is the "Beer Money" trick, which details how to open a bottle of beer with nothing but a one-dollar bill—handy for those times you find yourself without a bottle opener. Of course if you're short on cash, you can do the same thing with a piece of paper. Got a similar bar hack of your own? Let's hear about it in the comments.

Windows only: Add Firefox-style address bar shortcuts with IE Alias, a free add-on for Internet Explorer 7. While address bar alias shortcuts—as in typing "lh" to get to Lifehacker.com—have been available in packages such as IE7Pro (original post), IE Alias' tool adds the nifty ability to open multiple URLs with the same shortcut, giving Internet Explorer the same kind of "Open All in Tabs" convenience of, well, Firefox. IE Alias is a free download for Windows systems and Internet Explorer 7 only.

Before you head out on the town tonight in New York City, find out where to get your thirsty hands on your favorite hard-to-find beer at BeerMenus.com. This menu search site just launched with over 150 beer menus, which include over 1200 beers. Browse by neighborhood, brew, or bar to get a beer menu that lists price (by bottle and tap), alcohol content, and brewery, plus a map of the location, web site, hours, and phone number. BeerMenus.com is New York only (so far?) and isn't yet comprehensive in its coverage there, but it's off to a great start for beer-lovers in the Big Apple.

Along with the latest beta of Firefox 3, Mozilla has introduced a brand new address bar that represents more than a simple browser function because it is able to provide many other features besides allowing you to enter an URL and load the website. First of all, the address bar provides as-you-type suggestions depending on your browsing history. Moreover, Firefox analyzes the websites you visit more often and places them higher in the list in order to provide more relevant suggestions. Because o... read more »
