Getting work done on the road when you visit another state for a few days is one thing, but flying halfway around the world with your laptop bag is a whole other ball of wax. The 13-hour flight, foreign power outlets, lack of or spotty Wi-Fi, and the pain that is hauling all your stuff onto ferries, tuk-tuks, and buses every few days can sure put a damper on mobile computing. I just spent the last nine days in beautiful Thailand with two friends who have been backpacking through Southeast Asia for several months. While it wasn't an official working vacation (quite the opposite), I still learned a few back-breaking lessons about computing in that region firsthand and from my pals. First, disclosure: I only visited Thailand, and it was my first time. Beyond what the guide book read more »

Everybody loves looking back at pictures from a party, but unless you're lucky enough to have one of those friends who brings a camera to every party and does the work for you, documenting the event can be a pain in the ass. Most of us would rather be, you know, partying. Today I'll show you a few ways you can effortlessly—but extensively—document your next party, using everything from freeware software to some cheap hardware for your camera. When you're done, you'll be able to automate your party photos or make taking pictures fun, giving everyone incentive to contribute to the documentation process. NOTE: I celebrated my 27th birthday this weekend, and for an entirely age-appropriate party, I decided to throw myself a Rock Band birthday. K read more »

persuasion_illustration.jpgSome of us, uh, speak with a lot of, you know, hesitating phrases that are usually, well, unintentional, or a result of being, like, nervous. If that sounds like you, New Scientist magazine has some solid evidence that you need to work on getting them out of your system:Researchers asked 118 undergraduates to read a transcript of a testimonial about a scanner. In one version, the speaker used hesitations like "I mean" and "ummm"; in the other, he used none ... When hesitant language was used, people were less easily convinced that this was a scanner worth buying - even when it was a better scanner at a lower price. Style was especially important, the researchers found, when time was limited.Might make you think about how you'll approach your boss next time you need a favor, or a raise. Hit th read more »

Editor: Welcome guest writer Clay Collins, author of The Alternative Productivity Manifesto. Let's face it: if you've spent much time in the productivity blogosphere, then 100 more motivation hacks, 50 more Firefox plug-ins, and additional GTD system tweaks probably aren't going to make you that much more productive. There's a point of diminishing returns when it comes to productivity advice. Photo by Andy Ciordia. If, month after month, you continue searching for the latest tip, tweak, or hack, it may mean that your approach to solving productivity problems just isn't working. It could also mean that read more »

I think these slippers are great. They're very soft and cushy and I like the non-skid rubber soles. I didn't want scuffs or low back slippers because I go up and down stairs a lot and feel the backs on these are safer. Only caveat is the fit: they're very true to size. I wear an 8.5 and ordered an 8 because I thought the 9 might be too loose. I find the 8 a bit snug - wish they offered half sizes. Haven't washed them yet so I don't know if they shrink. Not worth the money and effort to exchange them, but if I had to do it over again, I'd order a half size larger. read more »
