Getting work done on the road when you visit another state for a few days is one thing, but flying halfway around the world with your laptop bag is a whole other ball of wax. The 13-hour flight, foreign power outlets, lack of or spotty Wi-Fi, and the pain that is hauling all your stuff onto ferries, tuk-tuks, and buses every few days can sure put a damper on mobile computing. I just spent the last nine days in beautiful Thailand with two friends who have been backpacking through Southeast Asia for several months. While it wasn't an official working vacation (quite the opposite), I still learned a few back-breaking lessons about computing in that region firsthand and from my pals. First, disclosure: I only visited Thailand, and it was my first time. Beyond what the guide book read more »

Everybody loves looking back at pictures from a party, but unless you're lucky enough to have one of those friends who brings a camera to every party and does the work for you, documenting the event can be a pain in the ass. Most of us would rather be, you know, partying. Today I'll show you a few ways you can effortlessly—but extensively—document your next party, using everything from freeware software to some cheap hardware for your camera. When you're done, you'll be able to automate your party photos or make taking pictures fun, giving everyone incentive to contribute to the documentation process. The Unclutterer weblog, which usually focuses on your home and office, turns its organizing eye to your hard drive and runs down ways to herd all the bits and pieces we collect on our computers all day. They suggest deleting everything you don't need, creating folders that mirror your life, using descriptive file names, and making liberal use of a temporary folder. There's lots of similarity here to my six-folder system for organizing "My Documents." Also, remember you can use automated tools like Belvedere for Windows and read more »

kindle.png Normally we leave gadget reviews to the crazy cats over at Gizmodo, but when reader Pete Riley told us he's "totally hooked" on Amazon's new reading device Kindle because of its time-saving superpowers, we had to know more. Right now the $399 e-reader is out of stock, but since Pete's one of the lucky ones who got ahold of the device, he was kind enough to write up his impressions.Pete writes:

Devices that fundamentally change the way you interact with your data are a rare occurrence. Some examples from my past include: the Mac Plus (my first computer), the Psion series 5, the Diamond Rio MP3 player, the tablet PC, and the Nokia N95. And to that list I'm going to add the Amazon Kindle. I've tried several other e read more »

My daughter-in-law has a HP laptop computer. The AC power adapter plug
where it plugs into the computer (the little round male plug) has come
loose from the wires. I took it to MicroCenter and asked if they could
put a new plug on it for me. They told me no and said I would need to
buy a whole new AC adapter which is $79.99. so expensive.
