Windows/Linux: Free, open source application GmailAssistant monitors multiple Gmail accounts and alerts you of new mail. The application can monitor anything from your inbox to specific labels, so you can get very granular about what you want to be notified of. The biggest drawback is that GmailAssistant does not support Google Apps on your domain, but if you've only got Gmail.com accounts, that won't matter. Aside from that, GmailAssistant is highly customizable for individual accounts and works like a charm. GmailAssistant is free, Windows and Linux only, requires Java. If you prefer to keep your alerts in the browser or you want support for Google Apps addresses, check out the Gmail Manager Firefox extension.

photojojo.jpgExperience nostalgia by receiving mailings of your old Flickr photos twice a month with Photojojo's Photo Time Capsule. Previously, we suggested that you mail your future self. Instead, receive emails from the past. The tool integrates with your Flickr account and emails you weekly (or twice a month) with photos that you've taken 1 month ago, 3 months ago, 6 months ago, 1 year ago, or two years ago (the time setting is totally customizable). With the Photo Time Capsule, you'll never forget your precious photographs that you took a while ago and you won't have to manually dig into your old pictures to view those precious memories either.

grouping_cropped.jpgIf you use Windows' built-in feature that groups similar program windows on the taskbar, you've noticed it only works when you've launched enough windows to fill the taskbar. The CyberNet blog offers up a customizable registry tweak that activates the grouping with just two or more windows open. Not everyone enjoys the grouping function, as it was downgraded to a non-default setting in Vista, but for those who do, the hack can be a real helper. You can download a registry fix file at the link below, or make the change yourself at the following key:
HKEY_CURRRENT_USER Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer AdvancedCreate a new DWORD (32-bit) value named TaskbarGroupSize at that location, setting the value to 2 or higher to set the number of programs to activate the grouping.

copy-handler.pngWindows only: Free, open-source application Copy Handler speeds up Windows file transfers up to seven times in addition to providing advanced features for copying and moving files, like pausing, resuming, and restarting transfers. Similar to previously mentioned TeraCopy, Copy Handler is a perfect tool for improving the default copy-and-move operations that your computer performs daily, especially if you're frequently moving large files. With optional integration directly with your normal copy-and-paste shortcuts and right-click menu, the app can even auto-resume transfers on error or on system restarts. Apart from all of that, Copy Handler is also wildly customizable and provides several diffe read more »

panic-firefox.pngFirefox only (Windows/Mac/Linux): Firefox extension Panic provides a simple keyboard shortcut to instantly close all of your current tabs while opening a new, more appropriate one. So let's say you're at a workplace that supports reading Lifehacker (you are boosting your productivity, after all). You could set Lifehacker as your panic URL, then start looking for your boss's birthday present on Amazon. (You are so nice!) When your boss turns the corner, just hit the customizable keyboard shortcut to close your active windows and fire up your panic URL. Of course, Panic's boss key would work just as well for less noble purposes, and it works fast. Panic is free, works wherever Firefox does. For other Panic alternatives, check out previously mentioned apps like the read more »
