winprompt_cropped.jpgWhenever Windows XP or Vista run across a file type the system doesn't recognize (regardless of whether you do or not), the user is prompted with either selecting a program to open it or to "Use the Web service to find the correct program"—which has yet to work even once, at least for me. elevator.pngWindows only: Freeware application Elevator disables the User Account Control prompt for specific applications through your right-click menu, getting rid of the UAC annoyance for apps that require administrator privileges every time they run. If you're a Windows Vista user tired of seeing lower-right-corner reminders about security, system updates, or other occasionally annoying speech balloon announcements, the How-To Geek has got a cure-all fix. If you'd rather not spend the time searching that out, the Geek has a double-click registry fix for download at the link below. Disable All Notification Balloons in Windows Vista [The How-To Geek]

If blinking text on a web page (like in the comments here on Lifehacker) is threatening to give you a seizure—or just making your head hurt—you can disable it in Firefox with a simple configuration tweak. No extension or user script required: just type about:config in Firefox's address bar, press the "I'll be careful, I promise!" button, and then in the Filter field, enter browser.blink_allowed. Change the value for that key from true to false, and you're good to go, no more blinking, ever again. Thanks, David! Disable Blinking Text in Firefox [Adamsdvds.co.uk]
