paperearbudholder.png Soldering? Duct tape? Pshaw. Sometimes all you need to make something is paper and tape. The do-it-yourselfer at the E-Frank blog wanted a simple, disposable earbud cord wrap for his music player, so he folded one up out of a single piece of paper and sealed it with tape. A "deluxe edition" of the wrap involves adding a slit to the spine to run the cord through. Dead simple and useful, plus you won't feel too bad if you lose it.

brita_refill_scaled.jpgWhether Brita filters really give you better-tasting or cleaner water is a subject for debate, but most agree on one point—paying $5 or more for each 3-month replacement filter isn't very fun. But with a bit of time and the right supplies—a sharp utility knife (and/or drill), a cheap polyethylene plug, and an activated carbon mix from an aquarium store—you can refill an old filter over and over again for far less cost. The hardest part seems to be getting just the right size hole in the top of your filter; after that, you treat the refilled filters as if they were new. Thanks, Jamie!

DIY web site Instructables goes step-by-step on how to shave with old-timey style using a straight razor—you know, like Sweeney Todd but without the blood. The tutorial includes lots of photos and several videos (including the one above) demonstrating the straight razor methods. The video makes it seem daunting and a bit expensive, but you may be saving money in the long run on disposable razors. Then again, my disposable razor turnover has slowed significantly ever since we highlighted how to extend the life of your razor blades. That said, if you've ever wanted to learn the art of straight razor shaving, this tutorial should have everything you need.

mementobox_scaled.jpgThere's nothing wrong with holding on to keepsakes of a life's great moments, but many marginal items often fall in with one's treasures, creating a good deal of hard-to-place mess. The Unclutterer blog highlights advice from an organizational expert on how to figure out what's really important to you and what to do with the rest. Her tips include at least one serious space-saver:Items that have a strong sentimental attachment should be organized in a manageable system — taking a picture of an item still retains the visual memory but not the actual bulk of the item.A picture won't substitute for everything you hold dear, but most of us probably hold onto a good number of items out of habit rather than any value we get from holding it. We asked earlier this week what disposable items you had found clever re-uses for, and the answers are in. Not surprisingly, some of you have some pretty crafty uses for household goods that usually end up at the curb. From CD-R spindles to corks, twist-ties to tissue boxes, lots of supposedly one-use items can save you money, free up space, and be seriously handy when the need arises. After the jump, a roundup of our readers' waste-reducing reuses. Yogurt photo by Dan4th, all others by How can I recycle this.
