We've got IMAP for email, iCal, and other syncing options for calendars, but what about our address books? Most likely you use a combination of proprietary services like Facebook and other social networks, desktop address books, and cell phone and webmail contact lists to keep track of who's who in your life, but there's still no easy way to maintain and sync your digital Rolodex wherever you need it. Now that Google's released the Contacts API—which lets apps easily access your Gmail contacts list—it feels like we're a step closer to the possibility of a central, sync'ed address book. (Though the API uses a Google-specific data format.)

One of the best side effects of using Facebook is knowing when your contacts' birthdays are—but you only see them if you log in. The Facebook application fbCal is out to fix that. Once you install it on Facebook, fbCal creates an iCal file for your Facebook contacts' birthdays as well as Facebook events. Subscribe to the feed in your iCal-enabled calendar app of choice, like Mac's iCal or Google Calendar. When I tried fbCal last night, I subscribed to the resulting birthday .ICS file in Google Calendar, and nothing showed up. Windows only: John's Background Switcher, a free wallpaper-swapping utility, now lets you import photos from your Facebook profile and your friends' for swapping in and out as desktop backgrounds, in addition to Flickr access. We've taken a look at John's handy app before, but he's fixed and added a lot since then, including an automatic background color picker, new collage modes including "postcard" (pictured), and other goodies.
