Web site LegalTorrents is a BitTorrent search engine designed to distribute Creative Commons-licensed content. Each torrent submitted to LegalTorrents is reviewed by moderators for the proper licensing and then posted to the site. Additionally, LegalTorrents hosts a high-speed seed for each torrent, guaranteeing that you should always be able to get fairly high-speed transfers; in my tests the downloads were indeed very fast (downloading over 400 KB/s). As is the case with many Creative Commons distribution sites, LegalTorrent's biggest hurdle is populating the site with content people want—but as more artists embrace BitTorrent as a distribution platform, LegalTorrents might be worth keeping an eye on (and may help you avoid read more »

uploadjockey.pngWeb site Uploadjockey takes the shotgun approach to uploading and sharing files on the web, sending your file to multiple file sharing services in one click. The downside of Uploadjockey is that the services it uploads to are some of the dinosaurs of the online file sharing game, like Rapidshare and Megaupload. That said, if you need that shotgun approach—say your ISP is blocking one service but may not be blocking another—it's a handy one-stop shop for sharing files up to 100MB in size. If not, you'd be better off going with one of the five best online file sharing services.

Over two years ago in an article on how to automate your hard drive backups, we recommended FTP'ing your files to a cheap, roomy web hosting plan's server for off-site backup. But weblog Digital Inspiration reports that many web hosts don't include file backup in their terms of service, and could delete your data if you use the space (you paid for to host a web site) for backup purposes. You'd think that if you pay for 500GB you should get to use 500GB the way you want—but be sure to read your host's terms before you assume. Since those salad days of hacking together off-site backup, I've since signed up for Mozy—which isn't perfect, but its whole purpose is personal file backup, and it does a pretty good job at a low price. How do you get your off-site backup going on? Let us know in the comments.
