sandwich_scaled.jpgWeb Worker Daily lets a chief web builder at HP.com tell a rare story—one of senior management leaving a meeting with his workers still respecting his answers and the consideration he gave them. His secret, strange as it might seem, was to keep his lunch sandwich nearby to immediately bite into upon being asked a question, along with a soda for quicker but still-important questions. This wouldn't work if you're the type to talk with your mouth full, of course, but substitute an acceptable-most-anywhere coffee or water and you've got a way to create needed pauses in conversation without, as the post puts it, "remaining silent for 15 seconds while staring at the ceiling." Might be worth trying at your next performance review or uber-frustrating meeting, rather than spilling forth with under-cooked ideas.

noon.pngReader's Digest online lists 15 ways to maximize your lunch hour—aside from eating lunch—that could help you make the most of your midday break.Daydream for 15 minutes — and then eat, run errands, or return to work. "Creative daydreaming is not only a way to get out of the daily lunch hour grind, but also a way to put your creative juices to work," explains Patricia A. Farrell, Ph.D. If you're feeling particularly stressed about a project, spend your 15 minutes mentally exploring ways you can tackle it. chopstickmeatseparator.png Food blog Lunch in a Box has a brilliant, simple tip for freezing meat in small portions easily and without wasting too much plastic wrap. First put the food into a large freezer bag and press it out as flat as possible, eliminating air pockets. (Making it thin speeds up defrost time due to the increased surface area, and pressing out excess air guards against freezer burn.) Use a long chopstick or ruler to create divisions within the food, forming individual portions. This way when you freeze the entire bag, you'll be able to quickly break off just as much as you want to use, no more. If you don't have chopsticks handy, any straight edge will work, like a ruler.

sewing-kit.pngA lot of unexpected things can happen in the course of a day at the office, so the SimpleProductivityBlog recommends putting together an office survival kit in preparation for the unforeseen. The author's must-have tools include a sewing kit to mitigate a popped button or tear and a stain remover for those times you bring lunch back with your clothes. Two weeks ago, I sat down to lunch with Julie, my attorney and friend who just happens to work almost exclusively with DUI cases. Figuring that if anyone would help me she would so I took the time to ask her about how she looks at DUI attorney business building and what techniques she would like to see more people use. After some jokes about whether I was looking to steal away her business, she shrugged and started talking. There are plenty of good business building tips out there for young attorneys, and the funny thing is, they re a lot more basic that you might think. I had honestly thought it would be more complicated than that, but Julie was quick to correct me. read more »
