The life-long battle between Yahoo! and Google is being fought at every level possible, starting with the search engine, advertising platform, email services, and going to the maps they both offer to their users. At the moment, as with most of the other options and services, Google is the Maps leader, but unlike in other domains where it chooses to present old features as new, the Sunnyvale-based company is actually doing a good job when enhancing the browsing through Yahoo! Maps experience.

A Google team entered the Fort Sam Houston army base in Texas and mapped everything, but the Mountain View-based company spokesman, Larry Yu, said that it was only a mistake. Naturally, the army had to take measures towards this possible security threat in the future, so it banned Google map-makers from filming and conducting detailed studies of bases. Google allowed its users to edit the maps before, by moving markers of their homes and businesses, but nothing of this magnitude has ever impacted the online community like the latest option added. ItÂ’s heavenly manna for those in the need for pinpoint accuracy and, to be honest, a big help to the engineers that constantly had to manually operate the adjustments as they happened.

Correction: Originally this post said the spreadsheet mapped search term hits by country, but it actually maps how much search terms are related to a given country. Apologies for the mistake!
Google expert Philipp Lenssen has come up with a brilliant spreadsheet that creates a world map colored by how often a term gets Googled by country closely a search term is related to a particular country. Data nerds will love this: The sheet dynamically pulls in the number of results for a given search term and updates a map widget with colors representing the totals.
