The Wall Street Journal reports on a recent study that asked whether more screen real estate gave workers the ability to do things faster and better. Workers were given either an 18-inch or 24-inch monitor, and the researchers found that:People using the 24-inch screen completed the tasks 52% faster than people who used the 18-inch monitor; people who used the two 20-inch monitors were 44% faster than those with the 18-inch ones. There is an upper limit, however: Productivity dropped off again when people used a 26-inch screen.Interesting findings (albeit funded by a monitor manufacturer), but I have to ask our space-savvy readers: How would you use extra screen space to make your desktop more effective, if you had the chance? What can you get done with a bigger monitor than with, say, a multi-desktop app like OS X Leopard's Spaces (or its Windows and Linux equivalents)? Tell us what you think, and share your own story of making the most of what you've got, whether it's laptop-sized o read more »

Techie Jeff Atwood says that while having lots of screen real estate to display more information is great, the downside to multiple or widescreen monitors is that they make you work a little harder to manage windows:
One of the advantages of small monitors, ironically, is that because they're small, they nudge users into a simpler, windowless method of working. Instead of wasting time sizing, moving, and z-ordering windows, users only need to deal with one maximized window at a time. They can flip between maximized applications in much the same way they change channels on the television. But once your display gets to 1600 x 1200 or beyond, this easy one-app-per-display model isn't feasible any more.

Atwood uses Windows app UltraMon to snap windows to predefined areas quickly to avoid wasting time re read more »

Windows only: Monitor files created in a shared location with freeware application File Alert Monitor. Select the folders you want to monitor and you'll receive alerts whenever new files get created or updated there. The File Alert Monitor is a lightweight and useful app that lets you keep an eye on a shared drop box or networked folder. One catch: Since it's built for transcription and dictation services, you'll need to configure it to monitor for additional file types (.WAV is only file monitored by default). File Alert Monitor can also keep a log of all the files that are created, modified, or deleted for tracking purposes. File Alert Monitor is freeware for Windows only.

access_cropped.jpgWindows only: See just how much time the kids are spending on the Internet, or dad is spending on Facebook, with Access Monitor, a free monitoring utility for Windows systems XP and later. The app's purpose is simply to offer a more user-friendly way of seeing who's coming and going on a multi-user system than digging through system logs, with assignable icons for each user and scalable, printable log reports. The software—which runs in the background but can be hidden and password protected from non-admin users—claims to be designed with XP in mind. I got it installed and running on my Vista system, but had some trouble accessing the administrator panel. Access Monitor is a free download for Windows systems only.
