The effect of permanent high beds (50 cm high) between continuously flooded furrows on soil moisture stress, root growth and yield was compared with traditional flat bed (20-25 cm high) cultivation for crops of vegetable soyabean cv. AGS 292, Chinese cabbage cv. ASVEG No. 1, Capsicum cv. Hot Beauty and carrot cv. Parano in trials in southern Taiwan. A method for integrating soil moisture tension over time and soil depth is presented which also accounts for stress following overwet soil conditions which frequently occur in tropical lowlands. Calculating soil moisture stress as an integral of positive and negative deviates from an estimated crop specific optimum soil moisture tension could be used to explain variation in vegetable yield. The relationship between yield and soil moisture stress was nearly linear for the crops grown during the dry season (soyabeans and carrots) but exponential for those grown during the rainy season (Chinese cabbages and Capsicum). Root growth of all speci read more »

Green leaf vegetables used in Malaysia were analysed for their ascorbic acid content. Most vegetables were purchased over a period of several months and wide variation was found in the ascorbic acid values obtained from different samples of the same vegetables. The average ascorbic acid content of the vegetables studied ranged from 29 mg/100 g in Diplazium esculentum to 643 mg/100 g in Pieroccocus corniculatus. Most of the vegetables had significant amounts of ascorbic acid, especially those with dark green leaves. Many of these leaves, rich in ascorbic acid, grow wild and can be collected freely or can be purchased from local markets for a few cents. In Malaysia there are available, throughout the year, a variety of green vegetables containing significant amounts of ascorbic acid. The problem is one of educating the rural people to the importance of including more of these vegetables in the diet. read more »

The possible contribution that agriculture and forestry may be able to make towards repairing the damage so far inflicted on the environment is discussed as well as types of international action to encourage them to fulfil this potential. Agricultural support policies should shift increasingly towards rural development, and farmers should be given systematic training in new methods of farming and environmental management. Farmers, foresters and their organizations should call for an evaluation of this process of change and request that it be placed on the agenda of the 1992 World Environment Conference. Governments should establish criteria for a system in which all industries (including agriculture and forestry) would be encouraged to preserve the environment, or penalized according to the extent to which they exhaust or pollute it. These criteria should be internationally respected. There is a special urgency regarding forestry. Forest owners and producers should call for a worldwid read more »

Precision application of agrichemicals requires an accurate assessment of the spatial structure of soil properties. Spatial structure analysis of soil properties could be influenced by sampling design especially on highly variable alluvial derived soils. The objective of this research was to compare spatial structure analysis between grid-point and grid-cell type sampling for alluvial derived soils, which vary more in one dimension than a second. Soil samples (0- to 0.15-m depth) were taken along two transects in an irrigated cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) field located in the Lower Mississippi Valley flood plain and were analyzed for total C and N, extractable Ca, Mg, K, Na, Zn, and P, and pH. Moran's I autocorrelation coefficient was computed at preselected lag distances and correlograms were plotted to examine trends in autocorrelation. A correlation range of near 300 m appeared to be associated with sampling across two soil mapping units, while a shorter range as well as a cyclic read more »

Probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics aimed at improving intestinal health currently represent the largest segment of the functional foods market in Europe, Japan and Australia. Evidence continues to emerge demonstrating that these ingredients have the potential to improve human health in specific intestinal disorders. The European Commission, through its 5th Framework Programme, is presently focusing on a substantial effort in the science of the intestinal microbiota, its interaction with its host and methods to manipulate its composition and activity for the improvement of human health and well being. Eight multicentre and multidisciplinary research projects now cover a range of topics required for the development of efficacious probiotic foods, from understanding probiotic mechanisms at a molecular level; developing technologies to ensure delivery of stable products; and demonstrating safety and efficacy of specific probiotics in defined treatment targets. This concerted research read more »

Thirty-five free-ranging healthy spiny-tailed iguanas were caught and held in captivity for 2 days. No virus was isolated from the pharyngeal and cloacal swabs. This is the first description of serum antibodies against reptilian reoviruses and PMV in wild iguanas. read more »

The incorporation of the random walk model into stratophenetic analysis marked a turning point by presenting a potential null model for microevolutionary patterns. Random walks are derived from a family of statistical fractals, and their statistics can be reconstructed using appropriate techniques. This paper lays the foundation for the explicit and uniform description of evolutionary mode in stratophenetic series using random walk null models and the information contained within incompletely preserved time series. The method relies upon the iterative analysis of subseries of an original stratophenetic series by measuring the presence of deviations from statistical randomness as the lineage evolves. This measure, and its probability of significance (evaluated using a randomization test),forms the dimensions of a descriptive space for microevolutionary modes. Each stratophenetic series can then be viewed as a journey through this space. Computer simulation of various evolutionary modes read more »
