The Mozilla Foundation announced yesterday that it opened Mozilla Messaging to develop its free, open source Thunderbird email software. Thunderbird was put on hold back in autumn, but now theyÂ’re taking it on again and the foundation sees a bright future ahead of it.

Windows/Linux: Free, open source application GmailAssistant monitors multiple Gmail accounts and alerts you of new mail. The application can monitor anything from your inbox to specific labels, so you can get very granular about what you want to be notified of. The biggest drawback is that GmailAssistant does not support Google Apps on your domain, but if you've only got Gmail.com accounts, that won't matter. Aside from that, GmailAssistant is highly customizable for individual accounts and works like a charm. GmailAssistant is free, Windows and Linux only, requires Java. If you prefer to keep your alerts in the browser or you want support for Google Apps addresses, check out the Gmail Manager Firefox extension.

Tech tutorial site Webmonkey describes how to compile software from source. The process involves three main steps—the basic commands in order are configure, make, and make install. You can get tripped up if your system doesn't have a compiler, or the software has dependencies that aren't available, but those issues are easily resolved—and there's no better feeling when you're starting to get comfortable at the command line than the first time you successfully compile software from source.
