Programmer Eric Wendelin says you can get a lot more done with sets of files at the command line once you've mastered the basics of find, an old school search tool. Find in and of itself gives you the same functionality as Google Desktop or Spotlight, but because it's at the command line, you can pipe results into other tools like grep or sed and really get things done in a flash—like do a global search and replace. If all this is making you go "huh?" but you've dabbled at the command line before, hit up Eric's post, which is a nice intro to what you can do with find. kidwash.png When the heat turns unbearable this weekend, get the kids outside anyway: head to the hardware store and pick up some PVC pipe, joints, and small plastic "mister jets." With those supplies, after drilling a few holes, screwing in a few jets, and gluing a few joints, DIY-er m32825 made a "kid wash" water spray hooked up the garden hose that the little 'uns could run and ride their bike through and cool off in the July heat. Snowzilla is no more. Municipal officials in Anchorage have given a cease-and-desist order to builders of the giant snowman that made appearances the last three years in an east Anchorage neighborhood. The giant snowman was a favorite for photographers and camera crews from Russia and Japan filmed the temporary sculpture. Snowzilla in 2005 rose 16 feet. He had a corncob pipe and a carrot nose and two eyes made out of beer bottles. read more »
