Managing music between your iPod and your iTunes library can be cumbersome at times, if only because you can't actually do a lot of management on your actual iPod. To that end, a howto from DIY web site Instructables details how to automatically remove unwanted songs from your iPod using smart playlists and the star rating system built into your iPod and iTunes. The idea is simple enough, but if you find it difficult to remember songs you want to banish from your iPod once you're actually plugged into your computer, this setup will take care of those songs automatically. Linux only: Convert audio files from inside your favorite music/playlist manager with transKode, a free plug-in for Amarok. If you've never installed an Amarok script, it's simple—grab the package ending in .tar.bz from the link below, head to the Tools->Script Manager menu, then hit the "Install" button and point to where you put that package. The plug-in is highly configurable, being based on the Mplayer multimedia tool, and accessible by right-clicking a file from the playlist. transKode is a free plug-in for Linux systems running Amarok only.

Webapp Muxtape lets you upload MP3's into a streaming playlist for anyone on the internet to hear. Register for a free Muxtape account, and start uploading MP3's (which you have permission to share), and send your Muxtape URL (youraccount.muxtape.com) to others, who can play your tunes directly from the page. Muxtape's interface is bare-bones—no album art and sparse song metadata—and there's no obvious way for listeners to download the tunes you uploaded. Web site YouTube Fast Search dynamically searches for new YouTube videos and creates playlists while a video is playing. If you've got a list of videos you know you want to queue up after the current one finishes, YouTube Fast Search will do the trick. Aside from the dynamic search, it also all happens through a really nice drag-and-drop interface. Windows only: iSnooze provides the same kind of iTunes-as-alarm-clock functionality as the Mac-only Alarm Clock 2, but lets you get a lot more specific about your wake-up parameters. Wake up to a certain playlist on certain days at particular times, have it pause as soon as you touch something on your computer, gradually increase the volume until you finally wake up—it's your best friend or worst enemy, depending on how important it is that you get up and going in the morning. iSnooze is a free download for Windows systems only.iSnooze

Chris "because I'm a teenage girl" Hardwick has a neat way to remember the music that defines certain times in his life: he makes a playlist (entitled his current age) of his favorite songs every year on his birthday. Along these lines, would love to see Last.FM send out a yearly "your most listened to tracks" email on your birthday.

Web-based music search tool Mix Turtle creates playlists of songs you find online. Working from an index of millions of songs, Mix Turtle supplies suggestions to your search terms as you enter them. Covering a broad spectrum of time and tastes, Mix Turtle returned impressive results for diverse searches such as Miley Cyrus, Robert Miles, and Miles Davis. Once you find songs you would like to listen to, you simply click on them to start playing or click on the plus symbol next to the song to add it to your playlist. Create an accoung and log in to save your playlists, but a login is not required to use the service. iTunes users who aren't heavy checkbox users, selecting songs by checking them off is an easy way to make playlists on the fly (by selecting "Match only checked items" in the Smart Playlist dialog). Macworld points out that you can check or uncheck a list of songs (from a search, or in a playlist, or in your entire library) by Cmd+clicking on any song checkbox in the collection (Ctrl+Click for Windows users).
