Gizmodo editor Brian Lam takes his MacBook with him everywhere, but he's not a big fan of the bulky power cord that accompanies his laptop. Instead, he opts for a slimmer, ungrounded PlayStation power cord. Where the Mac power cord is too thick to easily coil or toss in a bag — and has a ground prong so it's limited to those types of AC outlets — the PlayStation cord is ostensibly perfect. It fits into the Mac power brick, coils up nice and small and has two prongs. Plus, you can leave your giant Mac cord at your desk back home and don't have to deal with dust bunnies every time you get ready to go out the door.You're not limited to a PlayStation power cord, as any similar cord would fit the bill. When a surge of guilt hits just as you're digging your fingernails into the shrink wrap around your latest gadget, you know you've probably made a rushed, unhealthy impulse purchase. The No Credit Needed financial blog suggests a "$100 rule," in which any purchase price is divided by that amount and considered for that many days—a $300 PlayStation 3 gets re-considered for three days, a $1,400 MacBook is delayed for two weeks of researching, and so forth. I'd have to scale that rule down to $50, or else end up arriving home with a new Wii game every Friday, but as the author notes, the rule also gives you time to research better prices or deals before giving in and splurging. A new study by Australian consumer agency Choice shows that game consoles, especially the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, use significant power even when they're not in use. "Our tests found that leaving a Playstation 3 on while not in use would cost almost... five times more than it would take to run a refrigerator for the same yearly period," said the study which was published on Choice's web site. Right behind the Playstation and Xbox in the electricity-sucking list is plasma televisions and desktop computers. To save money on your bill, turn off the power strip the consoles and TV are plugged into instead of relying solely on the remote control. GAMING CONSOLE MAKER Sony has confirmed that Dutch
customs agents are seizing Playstation 3 consoles and that it will
appeal an injunction against its gaming devices obtained by its rival LG
Electronics.
The problem arose last week when LG secured a preliminary injunction
in the European Union that directed customs to seize any imported PS3s.
