runners.pngThe concept of the runner's high has been around forever, but the New York Times is reporting that, for the first time, scientists have validated the claimed euphoria that follows a run.Researchers in Germany, using advances in neuroscience, report in the current issue of the journal Cerebral Cortex that the folk belief is true: Running does elicit a flood of endorphins in the brain. The endorphins are associated with mood changes, and the more endorphins a runner's body pumps out, the greater the effect.Of course, the real runner's high euphoria is more likely to come with more intense, longer workouts, but I can guarantee running a marathon should get you there. If you've been trying to motivate yourself to get out and run more, the idea read more »

ripoff_scaled.jpgThere's nothing like the feeling that you've just paid far too much for something — or, even worse, nothing — to get your adrenaline pumping and your mind spinning up angry emails and phone calls. Trent at The Simple Dollar blog, however, writes that that's the easiest way to waste time and get a worse resolution to the problem. He suggests taking time to write down exactly what the problem is and detail the entire situation, but, more importantly, consider how important it really is before you start yelling. If it is a major migraine-maker:
At this point, if you're still emotional about the situation, wait before you escalate. Calm down. Put everything off to the side and wait a few days before going forward. Don't start reacting in the heat of the moment and blow a minor issue completely out of proportion or else read more »

pushup.jpgPersonal trainer Dan Boyle says that you can boost your morning energy and make it a better day in general just by doing a few push-ups. He says:
When you get up, right after you eat your breakfast, do this push up routine: Muster up some will, get down and pump out as many push ups as you can do. Wait 30 secondsPump out more push ups (again as many as you can do)Wait 30 secondsPump out more pushups (again as many as you can do and don't hold back... really push it!) When you are done and you stand up, whatever the tired, sluggish, or "get out of my face" morning feeling you might have felt will have been replaced with an "I am the shiznit!!!" feeling. If the push-ups make you feel like going a bit further, Boyle offers a two and a half min read more »

Running a web site that pumps out almost 20 posts a day about how to be more productive, we're already aware of the irony of technology that tries to fix the problems that technology presents. The New York Times gets hip to the Catch-22 in an article today on the firms and software applications out to stem the tide of information overload that this field has created: "There's a competitive advantage of figuring out how to address this problem," [IBM researcher John] Tang said. He said that there was "a certain amount of irony" in the fact that the solutions are coming from the very companies that built the digital systems in the first place. The introspection in Silicon Valley comes with defensiveness, judging from conversations with those involved. Digital communications are sacrosanct, the tools of the revolution, so the criticisms of them are merely a path to thinking about how they can be done better. And, of course, the solution to the technology problem is simply more and better read more »
