Windows only: If you still have trouble getting to the functions you need in Office 2007's Ribbon interface, give Microsoft's new experimental Search Commands add-in a try. Search Commands adds a tab and search box to the ribbon that finds buttons as you type into it. After the jump, see a screenshot of Search Commands in action.
It's kind of nutty that a piece of software could have so many features that it calls for a search box to find the one you need. Not sure that's a good thing.

Windows only: Moffsoft FreeCalc, a free download for Windows systems, looks just like your built-in Calculator tool, but feels like it's been listening to your complaints and requests for that app since your first days at the keyboard. FreeCalc sports an optional accountant-like history ribbon to see your recent number work, and displays the number currently in your clipboard memory in its status bar to help avoid mix-ups. It can run from your system tray, adds a few useful keys (like M-), and can be resized and color-themed, making it a worthy addition to the list of power replacements for Windows utilities. Author of Snow Crash, Cryptonomicon and other geeky tomes Neal Stephenson described how he wrote his first book at a 2003 USENIX keynote speech. After an editor accepted his book proposal, Stephenson had to complete the manuscript quickly: With all his vacation time and the 4th of July holiday there were 10 days, in which to write a novel. He rented a modern typewriter, secluded himself in his apartment and started to type. Soon a problem appeared: the typewriter had a modern plastic ribbon. The plastic mellowed and became sticky: it was July in Iowa City, and the apartment was hot. The only way to prevent the ribbon from getting stuck is to keep the ribbon moving.
