tipping_restaurant.jpgThe Just a Guy Thing weblog shares insights into the selfless act of tipping your waiter, your cab driver, the dealer at the casino, or your stylist. A rule of thumb:
Hand over the tip with your palm facing down and shake hands with the person you are tipping, simultaneously placing the money in their hand. What you want to avoid doing is waving the money around and making a big deal of it. While there's no hard and fast rule for how much to tip in every scenario, at restaurants, shoot for between 10% and 22%, depending on the service, meal, and the reputation of the eatery. How do you decide how much to tip? Let us know in the comments.

infused_vodka_scaled.jpgFlavored vodkas have become a popular ingredient in mixed drinks, but most shelves have the same selection of citrus and other stock flavors. Shake things up and save some cash while you're at it by infusing your own vodka. A decent bottle of the unflavored stuff, some chosen ingredients, and a strainer are all that's needed to give it a shot yourself. Hit the link for instructions and advice on making your own high-quality hooch. Photo by miss karen.

dirtykeyboard.pngA new UK study shows that keyboards swabbed from an ordinary London office had more harmful bacteria than—you know what's coming—a toilet seat. Yeeks! The accompanying survey showed that most users clean their keyboard infrequently (if at all), and clean their mouse even less often. Here's what you do: shut down your PC, unplug your keyboard and mouse, shake out any dust, lint and other crap, and wipe 'em down with disinfectant alcohol wipes. Right this very minute. For a more thorough cleaning which involves disassembly and compressed air, see this step by step guide. Or if there's just one or two rogue crumbs you'd like to fish out from between the G and H keys, use a read more »

status-screen-saver.pngMac OS X only: Donationware application Status Screen Saver adds status notification badges for popular Mac apps like Mail, NetNewsWire, and Twitteriffic, to the bottom of your monitor while your screensaver is playing. Considering the number of times we shake our mouse to exit screensavers just to see if we've received a new email, Status Screen Saver is a brilliant idea. Your screensaver continues running while you stay abreast of those updates. Status Screen Saver is donationware, Mac OS X only, works with any already-installed screensaver.

Yesterday, Hillary Clinton exited the presidential race, pledging loyal support to Barack Obama. In reality she was shaking her fist defiantly at the victor. Her prolonged farewell, though undignified, is not hard to understand. read more »

One of the new apps slated for release during this Friday's iPhone 2.0 launch is Friend Book, a "super Address Book" that promises to make dealing with your iPhone contacts much easier and fun. Made by Tapulous, a new company dedicated to iPhone/iPod touch apps, Joel Johnson at Boing Boing describes Friend Book's "holy crap" feature: The coolest feature without a doubt is the new "Handshake": put two iPhones running Friend Book together, shake them up and down, and the personal contact information of the phones' owners will be beamed through the net to the paired phones. Handshake doesn't work through a device-to-device connection, but instead passes location data back to Tapulous' servers — two shaking phones in the same location means it's time to s read more »

iPhone/iPod touch only: Free application Urbanspoon finds you a place to eat nearby at the shake of your iPhone or iPod touch. Aptly described as part Magic 8 Ball and part slot machine, Urbanspoon uses your location-aware iPhone to find where you are, then circumvents your indecisive tendencies by picking a restaurant for you each time you shake the device. The video demo above gives you a good idea of how it works, but it's got even more polish (and cooler sound effects)—including the ability to lock any of the three categories in case you want to stick to a neighborhood, type of food, or price range. Urbanspoon is freeware, works with iPhones and iPod touches running 2.0 software. If you don't ha read more »
