ABC News writers recently demanded overtime pay for bringing work home with them—including attending to work-related email on their BlackBerries after hours. The spat between the Writer's Guild and ABC was settled (writers don't get paid for checking their email for a minute, but do for any major work commitments at home), but it brings up an important question: Where's the overtime line when we're all connected to the office via email-enabled cell phones after hours? Tech writer Michael Arrington wishes everyone would stop using voicemail because it takes too much time to listen to a message (versus reading it), and checking traditional voicemail is outside of a computer-based workflow. Arrington goes as far as to avoid voicemail completely—he let his voicemail box get full, and never emptied it so he can't receive new messages. While Presidential candidate John McCain has openly admitted he's not computer-savvy, the BlackBerry-toting Barack Obama's often seen thumbing away on his gadget during downtime. The New York Times reports that McCain's admission that he's a "Neanderthal" has stirred up fierce criticism amongst bloggers and geeks who want a President who knows what he's doing online.
