When Google introduced Sitelinks, it attended to navigational searches. ItÂ’s not always when you know the URL you need to type, and by being the biggest search engine in the world, the Mountain View-based company had to address this special category of searches.

Sitelinks provide users with a more in-depth approach, providing links to the various pages and tabs found on the main site of the queried item. In other words, the option gives an 8 to 10 link long list of popular places to be found... read more »

lhquicksearches.png Dear Lifehacker,
I'm trying to make a keyword search bookmark for Lifehacker.com in Firefox, but it's not working. In the address bar, I can type http://lifehacker.com/search/myterm/ and it'll search for "myterm" but when I make a quick search bookmark for this, using http://lifehacker.com/search/%s/, I get a "Bad Request" error since Firefox doesn't replace the %s with the actual search term. All my other keyword search bookmarks work great. Am I doing something wrong?
Signed,
Desperately Seeking Quick Search

Dear Desperately,
You're not doing anything wrong; whether it's a Firefox or Lifehacker problem, it's true that the correct bookmark for a site search (http://lifehacker.com/search/%s/) does not work in Firefox 2.0.0.1.1.2. (It does, however, work in read more »

Firefox and Internet Explorer only: The Surf Canyon browser extension embeds extra search results at Google, Yahoo, and MSN. With Surf Canyon installed, search the web with your favorite engine as usual. A bull's-eye icon will appear next to results—click it to expand another level of links related to the single result. My test for a "lifehacker" Google search was promising: Surf Canyon included links to the official Lifehacker book, Upgrade Your Life, and a life hacks site search engine at Google Coop. Surf Canyon is a free download, and it's available as both a Firefox extension and IE add-on.

cybersearch-1.pngFirefox only (Windows/Mac/Linux): The CyberSearch Firefox extension transforms Firefox 3's AwesomeBar into a dynamic search box capable of returning results from popular sites like Wikipedia, Google, and more. The extension is fully customizable, so you can define keyword shortcuts for just about any search you can think of. For example, you could create a Lifehacker-only Google site search so that typing something like lh gmail in your AwesomeBar would give you the first page of Google results directly in the AwesomeBar. Choosing a result will take you directly that page. Luckily you don't have to create the Lifehacker-only search if you don't want to, as the extension already includes a custom search using the keyword techy that searches only Lifehacker, CyberNet, and Download Squad. fivemushrooms_th.pngWhen you're looking for a recipe with certain ingredients or by a particular chef, hit up Five Mushrooms, a multi-recipe site search engine which includes results from Allrecipes.com, the Food Network, Yahoo! Food, Cooking.com and Epicurious among others. Search by ingredients—like carrot celery onion—or specific quantities, like 1 egg, or by chef and ingredient, like emeril beef. You can even use advanced operators like the minus sign to exclude results (i.e., cookies -"chocolate chip"). Where do you turn when you need a good recipe for dinner? Let us know in the comments.
