If you've spent hours ripping a DVD or downloading a video just to find—when all's said and done—that the audio and video aren't matching up, reader Will suggests using video-Swiss-Army-knife VLC's desynchronization feature to sync up the audio.
In the VLC Preferences, click on Audio and then tick the Advanced options checkbox; there is an Audio desynchronization compensation setting that allows you to set a positive or negative time delay between the video and audio tracks in milliseconds. I find unsynchronized video/audio unbearable, and have been known to delete files without watching them for it. It never occurred to me that there would be such a simple solution!

The wave of URLs that appeared to lead to Google, but were created by hackers for their devious deeds, has caught the eye of security company McAfee, and boy, were they mad about it. ThereÂ’s no way not to be upset when you see that fraudsters turn one of the InternetÂ’s symbols into a means of committing cybercrime, but at least thereÂ’s something Google can do about it. Unfortunately, at least this far, it didnÂ’t, and that ticked McAfee off even more.

traffic-mapping.pngWindows Live Maps has added a new feature called Clearflow, which suggests routes based on traffic conditions with the intention of getting you where you need to go quickly and with a minimum of traffic congestion. Rather than suggesting routes based solely on real-time data, Clearflow also factors in time of day, weather, and even things like nearby sporting events likely to cause congestion. I've been testing it on some local routes, and while I'm not sure if its suggestions are accurate, I can say that it does drastically change its suggestions when I tick the "Choose route based on traffic" option. The Clearflow feature is available in 72 cities starting today, so if you give it a try, let's hear what kind of results you're seeing in the comments.

gmaps-photos-wikipedia.pngGoogle Maps has integrated Wikipedia articles and geotagged photos so you can see points of interest and images of any geotagged photo on a Google Map. The data, accessible through a new More dropdown button next to Traffic, can be toggled on or off by simply ticking the check box. Once turned on, Wikipedia points of interest show up on the map as a "W" and images show up as small thumbnails. Clicking either will give you a closer look at the object. Both tools promise to bring an excellent layer of information to the already impressive Google Maps, and who knows—soon Street View may be overshadowed by a wealth of geotagged pics.
