The Wall Street Journal reports on a recent study that asked whether more screen real estate gave workers the ability to do things faster and better. Workers were given either an 18-inch or 24-inch monitor, and the researchers found that:People using the 24-inch screen completed the tasks 52% faster than people who used the 18-inch monitor; people who used the two 20-inch monitors were 44% faster than those with the 18-inch ones. There is an upper limit, however: Productivity dropped off again when people used a 26-inch screen.Interesting findings (albeit funded by a monitor manufacturer), but I have to ask our space-savvy readers: How would you use extra screen space to make your desktop more effective, if you had the chance? Compromise is all this life is about for most people. Wired's How-To Wiki steps through how to turn your Nintendo DS into a full-featured digital sketchbook with a homebrew application called Colors. With Colors installed, your DS's lower screen is the painting surface; the upper screen shows your image output. Getting started requires a homebrew hacking kit and some sleeve-rolling, but when you're done the results are really impressive. Hit the jump for a video of Colors in action to see what I mean.

Ex-Google employees unveil a new search engine today out to challenge their former employer: Cuil, pronounced "cool," launches with 120 billion web pages in its index. My initial tests show that Cuil's results aren't quite as impressive as the size of the index, but they're pretty good. From Cuil's scant black homepage, enter your query (and it will offer suggestions as you type) and go. A search for Lifehacker yields decent results (though with bizarre images) and an "Explore by category" module on the upper right, which offers related searches.
