passport_sm.png Blogger Jenny says that when she puts an important item in a "safe place" so she won't lose it, she usually winds up forgetting where it is and, well, losing it. Her solution is to make a private, searchable database of locations via email:
I put my passport back where I found it and then I emailed myself:
Subject: Passport
Message Body: In your backpack in the closet.
I also copied my brother on the email and applied the label "Stuff." This way when I lose my passport next time I can simply pull up my email and see where it is located. Looks like a good way to "index" stuff when you're defragging your home.

emailcomments.png If filling out a web page form is just too much, now you can comment on Lifehacker posts via email. When you're not logged in, an @ button appears next to each comment, as well as a "Comment on this post via email" link. Click it to dash off a message with your thoughts on the post. Like all first comments submitted to Lifehacker, your message is subject to approval before it shows up in the thread. If it is, you'll get a randomly assigned user name for each comment-by-email after that. Of course, we won't publish your address on site. Non-logged in readers, give it a try, and let us know what you think.

The Lifehacker tech elves released two new features on the site today: the ability to automatically include images pulled from other web sites in your comments, and email subscriptions. First, to include an image in your comment, just enter a link and our system will automatically pull a thumbnail image from that web page and add it to your comment. Don't want it? Check off "Remove image." Second, you can now get our top stories via email or other means. Enter your address into the text box in the sidebar to subscribe to posts via email, Twitter, Skype, or IM. Er, as you can see from the screenshot, we may have a few kinks to work out of the comment images feature, so try it out for yourself and let us know how it goes.

share-this.pngSharing a Flickr photo or video has become that much easier, with a new Share this! button that provides tools to email, embed, link to, or blog any Flickr photo or video. Although sharing options aren't entirely new (you could always "Blog this", for example), the email option is the snazziest new feature. It auto-completes your Flickr contacts or accepts any full email address. If you're not crazy about just anyone emailing your photos with this tool, head to your account page to change who can use the Share this feature on your account. If you're like me and you got excited about the idea that you could sideload pics from another Flickr account to your own using your Flickr upload email address, it unfortunately doesn't seem to work.

As Windows user, one of the strangest things about Mac OS is a running, active application can be in focus without any actual windows open. If you use Command+Tab to switch between apps and don't want to get stuck in no-open-window limbo, use the following key sequence to open a new window on your way there: Hold down Command+Tab, then press Option, then release Command. It doesn't work for all applications, but it does for Safari and Terminal at least.
Open new windows via Command-Tab in Leopard [Mac OS X Hints]

email_this.jpgWindows/Mac/Linux (Firefox): If you find yourself regularly selecting, copying, and then pasting text from your browser into emails, Email This! is a definite time saver. A right-click (or toolbar) menu lets you directly compose a new Gmail, Yahoo, or Google Apps web mail message with the selected text, or pass it into a mail client like Thunderbird or Outlook. Those options can be added to or whittled down, and helpful shortcuts (Alt+G for Gmail) makes text sending even quicker. Email This! is a free add-on, and works wherever Firefox does.
