If you've spent hours ripping a DVD or downloading a video just to find—when all's said and done—that the audio and video aren't matching up, reader Will suggests using video-Swiss-Army-knife VLC's desynchronization feature to sync up the audio.
In the VLC Preferences, click on Audio and then tick the Advanced options checkbox; there is an Audio desynchronization compensation setting that allows you to set a positive or negative time delay between the video and audio tracks in milliseconds. I find unsynchronized video/audio unbearable, and have been known to delete files without watching them for it. It never occurred to me that there would be such a simple solution!

The Tombuntu blog points out something many GNOME-based Linux users may not have known—the newest version of Totem (available in the Hardy Heron beta), the default multimedia player, can search and play YouTube videos directly through the video sharing site's API. Simply head to Edit->Plugins->Configure plugins, then check the "YouTube" plugin. Want some of the higher-res goodies web viewers are getting? If you've got more than three computers you want to watch streaming video on with video rental service Netflix's "Watch Now" service, or you've just finished a re-format, you normally need to make a call to Netflix tech support to obtain a new key. The Tech-Recipes site offers a relatively simple work-around by exporting a registry key and importing it to whatever system you want to watch from. Your Movie Viewer key is located inside your registry here:HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareNetflixMovie ViewerClick on that Movie Viewer folder, head to the registry editor's File->Export dialog, and save it somewhere accessible.
