wikitranslate_cropped.jpgLifehacker reader Rodrigo writes in with advice on how to do one better than the very literal word-to-word translators available out there. What's the problem, you might ask? Well, you might want the Spanish word for "foundation," as in the base of a building, but most translators will give you "fundación," as in charitable organizations, when you really want "cimentación." In these cases, Rodrigo says:I just look up the word or phrase in Wikipedia and then click the name of the language that I want to translate it to on the left sidebar (where it says languages). This takes you to the page of the concept you were looking for in any desired language. The title of this page is usually the correct translation.Nice use of available resources, and a good way for those learning the language to avoid embarrassing misunder read more »

Jimmy "Jimbo" Wales is a scandal magnet in the past days, as he managed to break up with his girlfriend via Wikipedia announcement, has been held accountable for spending some of his companyÂ’s funds for personal purposes and, now, because he erased a $5,000 donorÂ’s embarrassing page history. Hold yer horses, it probably gets better.

This act on WalesÂ’ side is very disturbing, it shows that with the right amount of money, you can have your page being written all over again without the disturbi... read more »

When you need a quick explanation about something from the Wikipedia but don't want all the formatting, images, and steps it takes to search the site, head over to Lexisum, a Wikipedia lookup webapp. Enter your term into Lexisum, which searches the Wikipedia as you type and fetches the relevant parts of article results immediately, without refreshing the page. However, the biggest donation ever didnÂ’t come from the Wikipedia users, although they have a pretty important role in WikipediaÂ’s evolution. The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation decided to give Wikipedia no less ... read more »

Wikipedia is quite a popular service these days and this has a serious impact over the software market as some software companies developed applications especially to work on the online encyclopedia. Powerset is one of them but it may provide a really interesting alternative to the main Wikipedia search technology because it comes with advanced search features that could help you get exactly the information you want.

'How does it work?' you may ask. Well, Powerset works just like a... read more »

Instead of putting the onus on you to choose the best keyword, just-launched semantic search engine Powerset can find the answers you seek on the Wikipedia using natural language. Type things like "what is a life hack" or "paintings by Salvador Dali" and Powerset extracts those answers from Wikipedia and lays them out on an attractive page. CNET reports:
Powerset's natural language search technology is based on patents licensed exclusively from PARC and its own proprietary indexing. Powerset's engine has read 2.5 million Wikipedia pages and extracted "meaning" from the sentences, creating a navigation and semantic layer on top of the popular Web encyclopedia.
In my tests, Powerset was slow to respond (no doubt suffering from launch overload), but you can check out a video of Po read more »
