Weblog Digital Inspiration offers some counterintuitive advice for users who don't protect their Windows XP computers with passwords more difficult than simplistic passwords like abc123: Don't use a password at all. In fact, in this article from Microsoft, the blank password option is described as more secure than a weak password provided 1) you only have one computer or you don't need to network your computers and 2) you trust everyone who has physical access to the computer. Windows only: If there's only a few things most Microsoft Vista upgraders and naysayers can agree upon, one likely talking point is that Vista's fonts are generally clean, smooth, and a step up from XP. Getting the newer fonts in XP doesn't have to involve illegal downloads and system tweaking, however—as the gHacks tech blog points out, simply installing Microsoft's PowerPoint Viewer 2007 installs a bundle of Vista fonts in XP that you can use as your system defaults. Once installed, head to your display properties, then hit the Appearance tab to select a system-wide font. You'll also want to enable ClearType, which, luckily, we've covered before. As anyone who's reinstalled Windows XP knows, there have been a lot, and I mean a lot, of updates issued for the operating system, and waiting for them to install (/restart/install/restart) can be laborious, to say the least. Luckily, one helpful soul has done the good work of compiling all the patches made to Windows XP since Service Pack 2 was released and creating a tool to make an XP install CD that contains all those changes. You download the roughly 50 MB file, point a utility at your install CD's i386 directory, then wait for it to make you a new folder you can burn to disc. We've pointed out other offline updaters in the wake of the dearly departed AutoPatcher, but this one seems to grab more than just security updates and could save some serious time.

Dear Lifehacker,I have two Dell computers here—one running Windows 2000 and one running Windows XP. The XP machine is old and broken down, so I'm going to gut it for parts. I have the Dell-branded Windows XP installation disc that came with it, and I was wondering—can I use it to format and install XP on the Windows 2000 PC? I have the Dell drivers discs for both computers, and the XP license key on the label stuck to the computer.

If the XP CD you have is the one that came with the PC you're breaking down for parts, it's what's called the OEM ("Original Equipment Manufacturer") Windows disc.
