Webapp ItsOurTree.com builds your family tree in a dynamic, drag and drop, zoom in and out interface. In what feels a little like Google Maps for your family, enter your name and email address, then add your parents, your kids, their parents, etc. Each person node expands to a full profile with fields for the birth date, a photo, maiden name, place of birth, current location, and an area to free-type notes and stories, too. The result is a good-looking visualization of your ancestry—in fact, filling in the blanks becomes addictive quickly. Looks like a great place to sit down with your grandparents online and save the stories, places, and names that you don't want to forget. Thanks, Luke!

dipity.pngCreate or browse interactive timelines with webapp Dipity. The service can create any sort of timeline you want, but it really shines when creating a personal timeline; that's because Dipity integrates with tons of popular webapps, like Flickr, Twitter, Last.fm, or any RSS feed, so that all you have to do is provide Dipity with a few usernames or URLs and it'll automatically build your beginning timeline for you. After items are added, click on any item on your timeline or zoom in for a closer look. If you're using it in the personal timeline manner, Dipity is essentially another lifestreaming app along the lines of previously mentioned FriendFeed—it just has a different way of presenting your stream. Dipity also supports man read more »

Mac OS X only: When you need a little break from regular web surfing and want some random images pulled from the internets to give you a little creative jolt, you want Visigami, a search-based photo screensaver. Tap a keyword into Visigami (may I suggest "puppy"?) and watch it zoom and pan image results from Flickr, Google Images, or Picasa and send them flying across your screen in one of three random effects. Control the zoom, spacing, and speed of the 'saver movement, and sit back and enjoy the spectacle. While Visigami is more eye candy than anything else, it's a neat way to enjoy a montage of photos associated with your search term. Visigami is a free download for Mac only.

timetube.png YouTube search webapp TimeTube creates a timeline of video clips for a certain search. Search for something (like "American Idol") and you'll get back a timeline (or "tubeline") of video clips. Pan, zoom and watch the clips right on page. Fun way to catch up on old clips of interest you haven't seen in years.

Yahoo Messenger for Vista, currently in Beta stage, comes with multiple new functions besides the main XP releases, the 8 stable version and the 9 Beta edition. As you know, most web-browsers currently available on the market allow you to zoom in or out by pressing the Control key and scrolling up or down. Well, the same feature also exists in Yahoo Messenger for Vista so, in case you want to modify the font size, you know what you have to do. However, Yahoo improved this function a little bit, ... read more »

progress.pngNext time you're burning a DVD, downloading a large file, or extracting a multi-gigabyte file and don't want to sit at your computer staring at the progress meter, use your Mac's built-in screen zoom feature to keep your progress bar visible from across the room. As we've shown you before, you can quickly zoom in on any section of your monitor by holding the Ctrl key and then using your mouse's scrollwheel. Now just zoom in on your progress bar and walk away—you should still be able to track your progress from well into the next room like I did this weekend while burning a DVD. Handy. There's no reason why you can't do the same thing in Windows, but as far as I know there's no similar built-in shortcut. If you've got a Wind read more »
