CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - In her first journey away from rehabilitation
at a Houston hospital, U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords climbed the stairs
on her own Wednesday to a NASA jet that carried her to Florida to watch
her husband launch into space.
Although her first publicly seen steps were slow, the ascent
represented a victory for her 109 days after being shot during a January
shooting outside Tucson. Doctors have called the trip to the Kennedy
Space Center an important part of her recovery.
