tasklist.pngOver the last few years, to-do list applications have blossomed across the internet like wildflowers in a meadow—but which ones are the best? We've already covered your favorite GTD applications, but for readers who like to get things done with just a regular list (sans all the GTD frippery), this week's Hive Five is focusing on simple, no-nonsense to-do lists. Whether it's desktop software, a web-based app, a cellphone app, or plain ol' pen and paper, cast your nomination for the best to-do list on the block. On Thursday we'll round up the top five candidates and pit them all against one another in a final vote. The Hive Five nomination round takes place in the comments, where you post your favorite tool for the job. We get hundreds of comm read more »

mixin_ex.jpgWebapp Mixin is a social calendar that accepts short messages describing not only what you're doing but when, and shares that info with your friends. Plan and propose events or enter where you're going to be when with Mixin's drop-down box on-site, or wish for things or events (which have no specific time). Alternately use Mixin's short Twitter-style one-line commands (in the format of what @where when, like "Rock Band @Adam's at 7") to enter events via SMS or IM. You can also let your friends know where you are for a possible impromptu meet-up with Mixin. Check out a video demonstration of how Mixin works. read more »

Windows only: Free software Weys converts WhatEver You See on screen into mobile phone wallpaper by taking a screenshot sized for your phone screen. Weys doesn't have the finesse and fine tweaking that an actual graphics editor like Photoshop or GIMP would have—you simply slide the loupe-like rectangle (or model of your phone if you want to download a skin) over the image on your screen and snap the image to save on your phone. Weys is a free download for Windows only, though development on the project does seem to have ceased. Weys: WhatEver You See Mobile Wallpaper Creator [via gHacks]

nowdothis.jpgWebapp NowDoThis displays the most important item on your to-do list in a clean and simple interface. Hit the "done" button and NowDoThis shows you the next most important item. To get started, enter your to-do list into NowDoThis' simple text area in order of importance, as shown. Save your list and NowDoThis (otherwise known as "the boss") will spit out the most important directive. Press the "done" button and NowDoThis displays the next one. When your list is complete and the boss has nothing to yell back at you, you can feel like you've accomplished something. NowDoThis is extremely simple, especially for those 3-4 most important tasks of the day; it's one of the most basic (yet useful) to-do lists I've ever seen. Thanks, Rory! NowDoThis

shoeshine.jpgMaintain your leather shoes with the occasional military-style deep shine. The Art of Manliness blog runs down how. First, spread newspaper underneath the pair of shoes you're working on. With a horsehair shine brush, remove all dirt from the sides and toes of the shoes. Add a liberal amount of polish to the shoe but be sure to match the color of the polish to your shoe as closely as possible. Let the polish dry, and then focus on giving the toes and heels that extra shine using cotton. Rinse and repeat until your shoes look brand new. The article suggests practical gear to build a solid shoe shine kit, which could come in handy before that big wedding or formal event. Photo by abchbum. read more »

iPhone/iPod touch only: The Google Mobile app has a hidden secret that can save tons of time looking up web pages on your iPhone: an undocumented shortcut that performs Google site searches. Let's say, for example, you want to read our original post on the Google Mobile iPhone app. Just fire up Google Mobile on your iPhone or iPod touch and start typing in Lifehacker until the Lifehacker homepage shows up in the search results. Then just touch and hold down on that result for a second or so, until the selection flashes. You'll notice that the search box now lists lifehacker.com in a small blue box. site-searching.png read more »
